James Hughes' Kindling Pile

3 years of work come to fruition.

Duke MK. 44 Prop
A 3-year Project, the Duke MK. 44 displayed above is a first-time attempt at weapon prop construction. Using a sliced file ripped from the game (available online), this model includes everything on the traditional Duke MK. 44 model with the exception of the rangefinder that usually sits on the side of the barrel. This includes working chamber function with a snap-in lock to stop the chamber from falling out of alignment.

This project represents a lot of learned experiences, from acquiring the resources to print the model, to the physical construction, to the paint process. With the frame itself warped due to melting paint layers bleeding in unexpected spots, and a noticeable secondary coat along the seamline, this piece was not to quality of sale. Due to warping there is difficulty with sliding the chamber open, and it was not possible to full glue the frame together. But at a distance passes visual checks, and so was given as a gift for display and light use.

Overall, as a first project I consider this to be a success. Not necessarily because of the prop's visual output, but because of the many lessons learned about 3D printed materials and paint application techniques. It was also fun! And in the end that's what hobbies are about.
